Devon Coast to Coast Bike Ride 2019

Story

On his 63rd birthday my Dad was diagnosed with aggressive, advanced prostate cancer. After only a few days of letting that news sink in, he decided to face it head on and fight! He stopped drinking alcohol and coffee, stopped eating red meats and refined sugars, ate only organic food. He swapped his traditional pedal cycle for an electric assisted mountain bike and went out and had some wonderful adventures for as long as he could.

Dad absolutely loved his bike and getting outdoors. He would ride miles and miles in a day. Often telling people later on that he used to ride 60 miles a day and how could he get better so he could do that again.

Cancer took away so much from Dad. His freedom, his future, his ability to walk, and later some of his cognitive functions. But it never, ever, took his courage, spirit or bravery.

On the 22nd August 2018, he finally stopped fighting.

John Eastwood hospice cared for Dad in his last few weeks with us. They also have cared for me, and my family. The hospice relies 100% on donations and yet it is such an important piece of our healthcare in the UK. Please give generously to continue the help and support they offer to patients and their families throughout very difficult times.

Dad rode the Devon Coast to Coast a few years ago and asked if I wanted to do it with him. I’m overweight, unfit, have a dodgy knee and a cheap bike that gathers dust. I politely declined. Today I inherited Dad’s bike and I am going to ride that coast to coast on his bike to raise money for John Eastwood hospice. But I’m also going to make sure that I continue to have adventures on Dad’s bike far beyond this ride.

To satisfy the chicken and egg question.... for a long time it looked like the chicken was ahead, but when it came to the finish line it was the egg that was closest. The whole chicken outfit was vito’d by H&S but the chicken rider had some time for photos. Getting a helmet on over that was a challenge!

Apparently, we deserved a medal, and that's exactly what we got at the end of the last day! 3 days, 104 miles, 2 sore bums and 4 sore legs! THANK YOU all for your incredible support, and a special thank you to the support vehicle as we couldn't have done it without you!

Unfortunately, we didn't have much phone signal or WiFi during the ride so updates were sparse! Now that we are safely back home, I can post some of the pictures from the ride.

T-minus 4 days! The serious packing is well underway. Everything is oiled (including most of me), cleaned, checked, and there is a pile of stuff ready to go. I am packing for dry weather so hopefully the forecast will not change. I’m getting a bit nervous now but also looking forward to the adventure.

Last week's practice ride ended up here (accidentally) but what a view! Another 36km practice complete with only a 2 minor incidents and one wrong turn.

Moving target?! YES! The original £1000 target has been met which is smashing! Sooooo... after a moment of madness I have decided that if we meet £1500 then I'll be riding in a chicken outift! If we meet the £2000 target, my cycling partner will be riding in an egg outfit. Then of course the question is.. WHO CAME FIRST, THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG!!

So apparently people saw the post that said I’d do the ride in the chicken suit if we hit £1500 and are reaching deeper into their pockets! This makes me very happy, but also very nervous! 🐓😆
